Former Fresno State football player and current political staffer David Tangipa launched his campaign for Assembly District 8 on Tuesday, promising a voice for the Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Tangipa is the first candidate to enter the race and has the support of Asm. Jim Patterson (R–Fresno), who is serving his last term in Sacramento, to be his successor.

The backstory: Tangipa walked on to the Fresno State Football team in 2014 and was part of the conference championship winning team in 2018 during his senior season.

The big picture: Tangipa kicked off his candidacy at the Smittcamp Alumni House at Fresno State on Tuesday with widespread support from various Fresno area elected officials.”

David Tangipa, who played tight end at Fresno State from 2015-2018, posted on Twitter on Tuesday morning that he is “…proud to announce (he) will be running for California Assembly District 8.

“I am a lifelong resident of the Valley and grew up in the Foothills,” wrote Tangipa on the social media platform. “We need a new perspective in Sacramento and I plan on being that watchdog for the people.”

David Tangipa is currently a field representative for Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig.”
